As always, the winter Duke University PJGT event attracted a great field, and this year didn't let us down. Juniors and their families ventured from more than 12 states to compete in the mild winter temps, around the NCAA championship golf course; conditions were damp but very challenging for everyone. Although it rained all week, the rain ended in time for a sunny weekend with the course presenting tough-tucked pin locations on a long, wet course. Through it all, there was some very solid golf played by Danville, Kentucky junior Andrew McKinney who held solid with rounds of 78-73 to capture the Boys 14-19 Division by one shot. Andrew was also the Weekend Medalist for all the 14-19 age divisions. A close second place went to Kyle Berkshire, of Clifton, Maryland with two-day total of 152, followed closely by Wilson Simmons of Lynchburg, Virginia at 153. It was certainly a tight race throughout the final round at Duke for this division!
The 14-19 Girls Division produced an even tighter race as more than 6 girls had a shot at the title going into the final round, a sunny, mild day at Duke. Bradenton, Florida native Gianna Tomeo led the pace with an 85-80 to hold onto a tight lead going into Sunday. She ended the day 1 shot ahead of Ashley Yarbrough of Akron, Ohio and Sienna Chapman of Racine, Wisconsin, right down to the final putt! They all played stellar golf on the second day. Fourth place went to Haley Carr of Waldorf, Maryland with a total of 174. The Wake Forest women's golf coach came out to watch the competition and check out the new talent in a strong major field.
Lauren Beaudreau, of Lemont, Illinois captured the Girls 11-13 Division with rounds of 93-91, while J.D. Dulin took honors in the Boys 12-13 Division with rounds of 102 and 109. Bowling Green, Kentucky junior Collier Curd took the Boys 10-11 Division with rounds of 97-87. Collier also took home Weekend Medalist points for all the 8-11 age divisions!
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Club Glove and Old Mill Kettle Corn, as well as the Lee Westwood Golf School for helping with the event!
